Hi Timothy,
Worth looking into. We dealt with a case, for example, where we were able to put the clients Mortgage Interest relief 1st time buyer relief on hold while they went abroad for a few years, so there is that facility. need to confirm this can be done at the start of a mortgage.

Hi, I've got a question in relation to a claim for mortgage interest relief. My wife and had been living in London for several years and in anticipation of moving back to Ireland (I had a job offer) we bought a house (on an owner-occupier basis as we banking on moving to Dublin) but job fell through and we ended up staying in London and letting out the house (tenancy registered and rent fully declared for tax purposes etc). We did finally move back in Sept last year (what was I thinking I ask!) and moved into the house. I always assumed that I had no entitlement to mortgage int relief (I don't recall claiming it when I lived in IReland in 2000-2004) but having seen a few articles online today I'm wondering if I should in fact be claiming it. I guess a technical reading of the rules would suggest that I'm not entitled as the we didn't use the property as our principal private residence from the outset but we have been since Sept 2009 etc. any thoughts/advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Tim
